Obituary for Thomas M. Quinn

Thomas M. Quinn, 101, of the Town of Poughkeepsie, passed away at home on October 10, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Cortlandt, NY on August 11, 1917, the son of Thomas & Mary Finnegan Quinn. Tom was a graduate of Ossining High School and attended City College of New York.
Tom was as W.W. II US Army Veteran serving from 1942-45 in North Africa and Italy as a Tech 4 in the 3196th Signal Service Company. While stationed he in Rome he met with Pope Pius XII at the Vatican. He married Evelyn Eldridge in Endicott, NY in 1948. She predeceased him.
Following his service he joined IBM in 1946 and was Manager for many years retiring in 1977 from IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY. Not one for sitting still he ran for the Dutchess County Legislature in 1977 and was elected. Tom serves on most of the Legislative Committees during his time there and was Majority Whip for 3 years and Majority Leader of the Legislature in 1993 and 1994. He also served as a member of the National Association of Counties in Washington, DC and serves for many years on the Intergovernmental Steering Committee. He was also a member of the New York State Association of Counties on their Resolution Committee for 15 years which was located in Albany, N.Y. He was also a Special Assistant to Senator Jay Rolison from 1988-1990. Tom finally retired from the Legislature on December 31, 2003.
As a Legislator he also served on the Board of Directors of the following: The Hudson Valley Regional Council Board; The N.Y.S. Regional 3 Fish & Wildlife Board; The Dutchess County Senior Citizen Association Board; The Dutchess County Mental Health Association Board; United Way Grant & Admission Committee; was a member and Past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Dutchess County Community Action Agency. He was an avid skier and enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include his son: Marc T. Quinn of New York City; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son: Bradley J. Quinn; 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
Visitation will be on Sunday, October 14, 2018 2-5 PM at the Wm. G. Miller & Son FH, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. Services will be Monday, October 15, 2018, at 10AM in the Funeral Home. Burial will follow with Military Honors in the family plot in Union Cemetery, Hyde Park, NY. Memorial Donations may be made to: San Miguel Academy, 245 Renwick St., Newburgh, NY 12550.
