I met Karl Holmstrom on the train which went from Poughkeepsie to Manhattan in the late 1980's. Karl and I were both supervisors, and we had to get to work very early. In the year 2000, we both worked in lower Manhattan, and we had to take a subway which let us out inside of the Twin Towers. I had been laid off from my job in May of 2001, but Karl was still taking the subway to the Twin Towers on 9/11. I called him the night of 9/11, and he told me that he had no idea why all the people were running like the Dickens, but he just ran along with them, believing that a plane had accidentally crashed into the Twin Towers. He told me that he discovered that he outran a lot of the people who were fleeing the scene, and he said that, if anything like that should happen again, he "knew he could always run away." Subsequently, he entered marathon races for people over the age of 50, and he was proud of the first place trophies he received for being a senior marathon runner. Karl had deep faith and a positive spirit. He had the greatest sense of humor, and he was my very close friend as well as a close friend to my late husband Andy Strupp and to my current husband Gary Ward, who is currently fighting lung cancer. He never failed to send Gary get well cards. What made me wonder what happened to Karl was the fact that he didn't send us an Easter card. That made me think that the cancer came back. I guess I wasn't wrong... Karl was a very close friend of mine. I met his daughter Mary, but I never met his son, Eric. My condolences go out to his family... just know that Karl was a wonderful human being who will be sorely missed.
Love and light,
