Samuel Hepsabeth Shaffer, Sr passed away on November 17th, 2017 at Vassar Brothers Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Sam was born on March 29, 1923 in Poughquag, New York to Harold Fredrick and Susan Wickes Wright Shaffer.
On October 6, 1946 he married Calphurnia Emma Eckert at the Washington Street United Methodist Church in Poughkeepsie. Mrs. Shaffer survives at home.
Sam is survived by his three children: Sharon Shaffer Sparkman, Jay Shaffer (Doris), Samuel H. Shaffer, Jr. (Rosemary), two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Alice Phelps and Alicia Andrews as well as many nieces and nephews.
Sam is predeceased by his Mother and Father, brother Harold, sisters Genevieve, Lois, and Betty.
Sam was always very active in his community. His was a volunteer fireman in Hyde Park. He was Assistant Chief, Chief and Commissioner in the LaGrange Fire Department. Sam was also a Rescue Squad member and First Aid Instructor for the LaGrange Rescue Squad.
Sam flew with the Civil Air Patrol and his love for aviation continued throughout his life. He was a Charter Member of the LaGrange Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a 50 year member of the Shekomeko Lodge Free and Accepted Masons. He was a member of BPOE Lodge 275, Mohawk Rod and Gun Club and a Life Member of Mid County Rod and Gun Club. Sam was a past LaGrange Citizen of the Year and Grand Marshall of the LaGrange Fireman’s Parade.
Sam was the Owner of S. Shaffer Construction. Upon retiring from the construction trade he became the Building Inspector for the Town of LaGrange.
The family would like to thank Dr. Jack Keene and the staff of the 3rd Floor at Vassar Hospital for their compassionate care for Sam during his stay.

Visitation will be Sunday, November 19, 2017, 3-5 PM, at the Wm. G. Miller & Son FH, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. Services will be Monday, November 20, 2017 at 10:30AM in The Trinity United Methodist Church, So. Cross Road, LaGrangeville, NY. The Rev. Eileen Freeman will officiate.
