Obituary for Richard F. "Dick" Merritt
Richard F. "Dick" Merritt, 85, of Highland, N.Y. formerly of Poughkeepsie, NY passed away on February 5, 2021 at Vassar Bros. Medical Center after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was born in Poughkeepsie, NY on July 12, 1935, the son of Stanley E. & Ellen Kelly Merritt, Sr.
Dick married Antoinette Damico on August 10, 1963 in Poughkeepsie, NY. She predeceased him on January 6, 1994. Dick joined the Laborers Union Local #1000 in 1963 then serving as the Business Manager from 1977 to 1993. He retired in 1993.
Dick was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was an avid N.Y. Giants Football fan and was a former member of the Italian Center in Poughkeepsie. The family would like to thank the Doctors, Nurses and Hospice Nurses that helped make Dick's last days peaceful and comfortable.
Survivors include his sons: Ralph J. (Maria) Merritt of Highland; Anthony (Julia) Merritt of Arizona; daughters: Lori Miskinis & Michele (Glen) Vickerson both of Hagaman, NY, Linda Brown of Poughkeepsie, NY and Nancy Koeper of FL. Brother: Howard (Joan) Merritt, Sr. of Poughkeepsie, NY and sister: Audrey DeHart of Springdale, Arkansas both survive. Grandchildren include: Anthony (Kristen) Merritt, Phil, Domenic, Anthony, Nichole, Gene Farrell and Kathleen (Kevin) Smith and great-grandchildren; Miley Jane, Joshua, Jacob, Michael and Austin. There are several nieces and nephews. Dick was predeceased by a brother: Stanley E. Merritt, Jr. and sisters: Patricia O'Connor, Janet Heller and Barbara Burger.
There are no calling hours. Services are private and burial will be in the family plot in St. Peter's Cemetery.
